As a researcher of the Foreign Sign Department of Japan Institute for Sign Language Studies (JISLS), I have conducted researches on foreign sign languages and the Deaf with the colleagues (June 2003-June 2012).
Foreign Sign Department of JISLS is mainly conducting researches on the following topics:
- Sponsoring the Seminar of Asian sign languages (once a year)
- Publication of Sign languages of Asia (Asia no shuwa) (once a year)
- Conducting cooperative researches with the Deaf in China and South Korea
- Conducting researches on international signs
Note: The management of JISLS was transferred from Japanese Federation of the Deaf (JFD) to National Center of Sign Language Education (Community Sagano) in April 2006.

Research on sign languages in Asia, Africa and Latin America (Oct. 24, 2009, Ibaraki)
Videotaping of the signs were conducted by the Foreign Sign Department of JISLS with the cooperation of 7 JICA internship fellows from 4 Asian, African and Latin American countries (Myanmar [2 persons]; Sri Lanka; Uganda [2 persons] and Colombia [2 persons]) in JICA Center in Ibaraki, Osaka.
Research on sign languages in Asia, Africa and Latin America (Nov. 16, 2008, Ibaraki)
Videotaping of the signs were conducted by the Foreign Sign Department of JISLS with the cooperation of 10 JICA internship fellows from 7 Asian, African and Latin American countries (China [2 persons]; Vietnam [2 persons]; Myanmar; Sri Lanka; Uganda; Colombia [2 persons] and Ecuador) in JICA Center in Ibaraki, Osaka.

Videotaping of the signs were conducted by the Foreign Sign Department of JISLS with the cooperation of 9 JICA internship fellows from 9 Asian, African and Latin American countries (India; Uzbekistan; Sri Lanka; China; Vietnam; Myanmar; Ecuador; Colombia and Democratic Republic of Congo) in JICA Center in Ibaraki, Osaka (I participated only in the task of making proper nouns lists).

The 10th Seminar of Asian sign languages / Investigation on Asian sign languages (Oct. 23-24, 2004, Oita)
The 10th Seminar of Asian sign languages was sponsored by the Foreign Sign Department of JISLS-JFD in Oita. 8 JICA internship fellows from 8 Asian and Pacific countries (Cambodia; China; Indonesia; Malaysia; Pakistan; Solomon Islands; Thailand and Uzbekistan) were invited to the seminar and gave us lectures on the Deaf and sign languages in their countries. Also videotaping of the signs were conducted with their cooperation.
Sign Languages of Asia vol.5 published (Jun., 2004)
"Sign Languages of Asia" vol.5 edited by the Foreign Sign Department of JISLS-JFD was published in June 2004. It includes presentation papers by the Asian Deaf leaders in the Seminar of Asian Sign Languages in 2002. Also it includes the photo data of signs of several Asian countries. My paper "Sign language in Myanmar: One language or two" is also included.
Visit to Yangon Deaf Association, Myanmar (Dec. 19-23, 2003, Yangon)
As a member of the research group of Asian Deaf Friendship Fund of Japanese Federation of the Deaf (JFD), I visited Yangon Deaf Association, Myanmar from December 19 to 23, 2003. The results appeared in the following documents published by JFD:Asian Deaf Friendship Fund visited Myanmar.

Meeting with JICA internship fellows from Africa (Nov. 1, 2003, Tokyo)
A meeting with 2 Deaf Africans was held by the Foreign Sign Department of JISLS-JFD in Tokyo. They are JICA internship fellows from Ghana and Zambia. Interviews and videotaping of the signs were conducted with their cooperation.
